Although the Greek word hypnos proceed-sleep-hypnosis has nothing to do with this. It is, rather, been artificially produced a high concentration of consciousness through words.
Hypnosis is a temporary state that we all live at least once during the day, when we “lose” when reading a book, watch a movie or to meditate. Our attention is concentrated and creates this state between sleep and wakefulness. At this point in the subconscious can work freely without the intervention of the conscious mind, the analytical part.
Nobody knows the origin of hypnosis. The ancient peoples like the Maya, Aztecs, Persians and the Greeks used hypnosis as a means of healing. The priests or sorcerers caused a state called “magic sleep” through the laying on of hands or ritual songs and dances characterized by a monotonous rhythm.
The systematic use of hypnosis began with Anton Mesmer (1734-1815). Mesmer was convinced we were all under the power of magnetic fluids. His argument was that if the moon exerts a power over the seas of the earth, may also influence human body fluids and actually restore health. For him the disease was created by a suggestion of the body that could solve the transmission of magnetic waves.
Milton Erickson (1901-1980) is one of the great characters related to hypnosis. In fact, contributed to the creation of more efficient techniques and was considered the smartest hypnotist.
The myth and reality
As with all therapeutic methods, it is important to get a good level of trust between the client and the hypnotist. Sometimes, we must talk about the person fears about hypnosis. The major obstacle at the time of entering the hypnotic state is fear.
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis, as if under hypnosis are awake, one can get “stuck” in the hypnotic state or under hypnosis you lose control.
The reality is very different. Individuals do not lose consciousness when in a trance: its concentration is located in a special way. In addition, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Individuals are allowed to enter into a trance because they want to. Without the cooperation of the person is not possible to induce trance. Finally, no one can ever be plunged into a hypnotic sleep. If for any reason the hypnotist left the patient under hypnosis and drop dead, the patient will remain in the hypnotic sleep for a few minutes and gradually go into a normal sleep and wake up without any problems on their own.
Some common uses of hypnosis
Stop Smoking
It is important to include positive suggestions in the session of hypnosis. “From now on I will be free to breathe the air … air and caught my lungs use oxygen and it gives me great pleasure … If someone offers me a South Beach Smoke cigarette or a pack of snuff I am proud of myself for taking care to enjoy the best of my lungs … it’s a great pleasure to run … I feel more strength and energy to make love … and food have more flavor … I’ll be proud of myself … ”
Thin
Most obese people eat when not hungry. They eat because they are bored, depressed or angry. The hypnotist can find some reasons that encourage the person to overeat and create appropriate suggestions.
Examples of useful suggestions for weight loss are: “I feel good … and only when I have hunger … if I’m angry or bored is how to express my emotions … I enjoy every day more food … I like my body and as hungry when I have …”
Treatment of chronic pain
Hypnosis can relieve chronic pain of a person without the side effects of analgesic medications.
There are many ways to use hypnosis for pain. Milton Erickson used metaphors during the hypnosis session. In one of his most famous cases, Erickson spoke about how a tomato grows from a seed to be the adult plant to provide fruit. His patient was an elderly gardener, affected by a terminal cancer and immune to painkillers. Erickson included, very cleverly, suggestions of tranquility and well in his story of the tomato. The patient accepted these suggestions and could enjoy a few days without pain.
How does it feel during hypnosis?
The initial procedure is usually at a fixed concentration and body relaxation. Once the person can concentrate and relax, go into the first level of the hypnotic state or trance light.
In this state, the person feels a sense of lightness or heaviness in the body. Most clinical hypnotists use a light trance. Although the phenomena of this state, the person is well aware: you can hear the voice of the hypnotist, to hear other noises and sometimes casually keep my eyes open and answer the questions hypnotist.
As mentioned above, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Only a person who is willing to hypnotize can go into a trance. Betty Erickson, wife of famous American psychiatrist and hypnotist Dr. Milton H. Erickson, devised a procedure to self-induced hypnotic trance:
1) Sit in a comfortable chair to decide what you want to achieve or what difficulty you need to solve. Stare at an object.
2) I gave you 4 sentences with visual content. For example: “I see the light as it shines on the cover of the book”, “I see the shelf to my right,” “I see my arms.”
3) I gave you 4 sentences with audio content. For example: “I hear the sound of the fan,” “I hear the noises of the street,” “I hear the sound of my breathing.”
4) I gave you 4 sentences containing kinesthetic. For example: “I can feel my feet in your shoes”, “I can feel the warmth of my fingers,” “I can feel the weight of my clothes.”
5) Without looking away from the object, you say 3 sentences visual, auditory and 3 3 sentences kinesthetic phrases.
6) continued to stare at the object, and you say 2 sentences visual, kinesthetic 2 hearing and 2.
7) Finally you say 1 sentence visual, auditory, 1 kinesthetic 1.
begins to feel that arm and hand which seems lighter.
9) Say to yourself, “The hand that seems to still look slightly lighter and floated unconscious and automatic movements, so as to rise, I’ll sink comfortably into a trance.”
No matter if you repeat a few sentences. Simply saying you go your own experience: what you see, hear and feel. If after a while your eyes want to close, let them close, and say to yourself imagining visual phrases environment.
When you enter a trance, the subconscious mind does the work to find their own resources, or learning experiences, which may serve to overcome our difficulties and achieve our goal. Have patience and practice it.
